The advantages of reciprocating grate boiler are: ignited fuel basically belongs to two-sided ignition, which is more adaptable to fuels; the fuel layer keeps being raked and loosened, so that contact between air and fuels enhances significantly, combustion efficiency is high; with proper air distribution configuration, it can reduce mechanical incomplete combustion heat loss, and reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, being more friendly to the environment.

Guangzhou Kechao Thermo Technology Company has improved a 40t/h medium temperature-pressure pulverize coal boiler from a large sugar industry group in 2023. This boiler was originally manufactured by Dongfang Industrial Boiler Company. In this improvement, it adopts eciprocating grate layer combustion mode and hydraulic feeding system. The specifications of improved boiler are as follows:

Boiler mode: XG40-3.82/450-T

Design pressure: 3.83MPa

Superheated steam temperature:  450℃

Cogeneration: attached with 3000Kw back pressure steam turbine. All exhausted steam is used in sugar refining section.

After the boiler improvement, crushed eucalyptus root chips is used as the main fuel, with a moisture content of about 45% and a sediment content of about 10%. The heat generation sampled before furnace is 2100Kcal/Kg~2300Kcal/Kg, mixed with small amount of  branch materials and construction waste. With a product season of operation,  it has been proven that the improved boiler is well adapted to changes in fuel, and the operating parameters fully meet the design requirements.

What we designed is a biomass (scrap material) boiler, with fuel ranging from biomass fuel to various solid waste fuels. The range of biomass fuels that can be used for energy generation is wide: from agricultural and wood residues, to industrial processes such as mud, recycled wood, and specially planted energy crops.

No any two types of fuel are the same. For example, combustion characteristics vary not only by species but also by location. The characteristics of fertilization and biomass growth sites have an impact on ash content, ash melting, scaling, and slagging temperatures, as well as emissions. There are also differences in various parts of crops, such as the biomass characteristics of bark, branches, and stems, as well as the biomass characteristics of leaves, empty fruit clusters, and palm shells in palm trees.

Other solid fuels recovered from waste, such as RDF (Rubbish derived fuel) and SRF (solid recycled fuel), are various mixtures of different solid products and are more difficult to define. For each fuel we encounter, we repeatedly analyze all typical characteristics, such as volatile content, high initial moisture, high ash content, and low-temperature melting phenomenon, as well as the content of sulfur, potassium, or any possible heavy metals.

Generally speaking, wood biomass fuel is the most common and popular fuel. Biomass from crops or contaminated wood residues are more challenging in combustion.
