 DOWNLOAD

Plate Heat Exchanger, PHE, is an efficient and compact heat transfer device. Its core consists of a stack of corrugated metal plates. Thin rectangular channels are formed between plates, where hot and cold fluids flow alternately to realize heat transfer.

Key Features

1. High heat transfer efficiency

  • Corrugations (herringbone, horizontal, etc.) are pressed on plate surfaces, which induce turbulent flow of fluids and deliver high heat transfer coefficients (up to 3000–7000 W/(m²·K)).
  • Counterflow arrangement: the unit achieves a large logarithmic mean temperature difference and high heat recovery efficiency (over 90%).

2. Compact structure & small footprint

  • Teat transfer area per unit volume can reach 150–250 m²/m³, approximately 3–5 times that of shell-and-tube type.
  • Lightweight, requiring minimal installation space.

3. Flexible and adjustable

  • Quantity of plates can be adjusted based on working conditions for convenient modification of heat transfer area.
  • A wide range of plate materials and corrugation types are available to suit different media and working conditions.

4. Easy to clean and maintain

  • Demountable structure; plates can be removed for cleaning by loosening clamping bolts.
  • Suitable for scaling-prone fluids and fluids with impurities.

5. Excellent sealing performance

  • Rubber or fluororubber gaskets are used for sealing between plates, resulting in fewer leakage points.
  • Internal leakage can be detected via observation ports.

6. Limitations

  • Limited pressure resistance (generally ≤ 2.5 MPa, up to 4 MPa with special design).
  • Limited temperature resistance, determined by gasket material, normally ranging from −25°C to 180°C.
  • Not suitable for fluids containing large amounts of fibers or particles (risk of channel clogging).
  • Sealing gaskets require periodic replacement.

Refrigerant systems, small flow and high pressure conditions.

Fully Welded Plate Heat Exchanger

Laser / TIG welded construction, gasket-free, resistant to high temperature and high pressure.

High temperature, corrosive media and high pressure working conditions

Semi-Welded Plate Heat Exchanger

Plate pairs welded + sealing gaskets, combining the advantages of both designs

Ammonia refrigeration, hazardous media service

Selection Key Points

Comprehensive considerations for selection:

  • ●Medium characteristics: corrosivity, viscosity, solid content, temperature & pressure.
  • ●Heat load & temperature difference: confirming required heat transfer area.
  • ●Pressure drop requirement: deeper corrugations on plates improve better heat transfer but result in higher pressure drop.
  • ●Material selection: Stainless steel (304/316), Titanium, Hastelloy, SMO254, etc.
  • ●Sealing gasket:NBR, EPDM, Viton, PTFE, etc., selection shall match medium & temperature.
